Kolkata, Oct 11 (IANS) A second-year student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside a private medical college in Durgapur in West Burdwan district on Friday night, police confirmed on Saturday.
A case has been registered against several people in connection with the incident, although no one has been arrested yet.
Police said that the student, resident of Jaleshwar, Odisha, had left the college campus with one of her classmates to have dinner outside.
“It is alleged that the miscreants started harassing them at that time. They also chased their friend, who ran away out of fear. Finding the girl alone, the miscreants dragged her to a nearby forest, where the crime was committed,” said a senior official of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate.
The college administration has already lodged a complaint with the police.
According to family sources, the student had left the college campus to have dinner at around 8.30 pm on Friday night. Then several youths blocked the student’s path. She was then allegedly taken to a forest behind the private medical college campus and allegedly gang-raped.
After the gang rape, the accused also allegedly took away the student’s mobile phone. The student is currently admitted in the hospital.
The family members said that they did not want to keep him in this condition for studies.
Her parents told the media, “My daughter is not safe here. I will not let her pursue further studies here. I will take her home.”
Although officials of Durgapur’s New Township Police Station have started investigation, the accused have not been identified yet.
The local BJP leadership has already protested against the incident, alleging that an attempt was made to suppress several details related to the rape and murder case of RG Kar junior doctor. He demanded that there should be no such cover-up in this matter.
National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar also expressed strong anger over the incident. Referring to the RG Kar case, she said, “Incidents of sexual assault and rape are on the rise because the culprits are not being caught promptly and are not being punished. We have not seen any rapist or murderer getting the final punishment in West Bengal. No one has been hanged. Despite continuous protests, justice is being delayed and no criminal is getting the punishment he deserves, perhaps due to some invisible influence.” Reason.”
On August 9 last year, the body of a postgraduate trainee was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The incident sent shockwaves across the country and beyond, triggering widespread and sustained protests by doctors, common citizens and housewives. While the lone convict, Sanjay Roy, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not completed its investigation into the “larger conspiracy” behind the crime even after a year.
