Odisha: Speaker rejected Congress mistrust speed, MLA platform walkout

Bhubaneswar, September 22 (IANS) Odisha Assembly President Surma Padi on Monday rejected the motion of no -confidence motion transferred by the opposition Congress party against the state government.

When the House’s proceedings started again at 4 pm on Monday, Congress CLP leader Ram Chandra Kadam requested Pali to accept the no -confidence motion transferred by the party.

In response, the Speaker told the House that on September 18, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, along with 14 other MLAs, presented a no -confidence notice to the Assembly Secretary.

Later, he issued instructions to present notice at home the next day on 19 September.

However, the proposal could not be moved because the house was not in order. He further stated that according to parliamentary procedures, the time allotted for mistrust speed was discontinued due to continuous disruptions in the assembly.

Subsequently, the Congress MLAs created a storm in the well of the House and started shouting slogans near the podium of Speaker Pali.

He later staged a walkout from the House to protest against the verdict.

Congress MLAs later demonstrated in the assembly premises under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking to media persons, Kadam said: “We have submitted the proposal after all parliamentary rules and procedures. However, the speaker rejected the proposal unfairly and deliberately.”

He alleged that the BJP -led state government ensured rejection of the proposal through the Chairman.

Kadam further claimed that both the ruling BJP and the BJD conspired and deliberately disrupted the house and throwed the voice of the Congress and throw the voice of the Congress.

On the other hand, BJD Chief Whip Praila Mallik slammed the Congress to transfer no-confidence motion with just 14 MLAs to the first house.

He alleged that the Congress party deliberately brought a proposal without discussing with the main opposition BJD to defame its party.

He alleged that the Congress has no voter base on the ground and she is trying to regain it from such a dramaticness.

Meanwhile, the House continued its business with BJD and BJP members.

Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj introduced the Odisha University (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was taken for discussion.
