Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (IANS) Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Thursday welcomed the state government’s decision to order a CBI probe into the multi-crore police sub-inspector (SI) recruitment scam, calling it a major step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in the recruitment process.

Speaking to media persons, Harichandan said, “The Chief Minister has already announced a CBI inquiry. This shows the government’s firm intention to maintain complete transparency in the recruitment process. The ongoing recruitment drive will continue with the highest standards of fairness and integrity.”

He further said, “The government is committed to bringing in a transparent system, and the Commission will play a key role in ensuring a clean and reliable recruitment mechanism. The reforms being implemented will bring visible changes in the system.”

Harichandan expressed confidence that no irregularities will be tolerated and the CBI probe will strengthen public confidence in the government’s recruitment process.

It is pertinent to mention here that Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday ordered a CBI inquiry into the multi-crore SI recruitment exam scam.

According to the official statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), large-scale irregularities and serious allegations of corruption were revealed in the Odisha Police SI recruitment examination. Initially the investigation was handed over to the Crime Branch-CID of the state police.

Preliminary findings suggest that the scam may extend beyond Odisha, especially to Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

Apart from this, it is also suspected that inter-state organized criminal networks may also be involved in this multi-crore scam.

“Keeping these developments in mind, the Chief Minister has decided to hand over the investigation to the CBI to ensure a thorough investigation, complete exposure of the scam and stringent punishment for all those involved in the scam,” the CMO said.

Additionally, the state government is also considering setting up a permanent commission for selection of personnel in the police and other uniformed services to ensure transparency and accountability in recruitment in future. It is noteworthy that till now Odisha Police has arrested 123 accused involved in SI recruitment scam.
