Bhubaneswar, Nov 17 (IANS) Odisha Police on Monday arrested a drug smuggler and seized banned drugs worth around Rs 40 lakh during a raid in Airfield Police Station area of Bhubaneswar.
The accused drug smuggler was identified as SK Akbar of Arda Bazaar (Golapola) under Sahadevkhunta police limits of Balasore district.
Police sources said that, acting on carefully coordinated intelligence inputs, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of the Commissionerate Police launched a strategic surveillance operation targeting the illegal brown sugar trade in the Bhubaneswar area.
It further said that the operation led to the successful arrest of the accused after interception near Lingaraj Road Railway Station under the limits of Airfield Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
The accused man was allegedly waiting near Lingaraj Railway Station Road area to transact illegal narcotics.
A senior police officer said, “Through quick and precise action, the unit seized 400 grams of brown sugar. The suspect was apprehended without any resistance and is currently being interrogated to gain more information about his operations and network.”
The Commissionerate Police, in a press statement, said the seizure of substantial quantity of narcotics and arrest of key persons represents a significant progress in the ongoing mission undertaken by the city police to protect the community.
“We are committed to dismantling criminal syndicates and ensuring that criminals are brought to justice.”
“The arrested persons will be produced before the court as the investigation continues to trace the supply chain, identify financial backers and uncover any wider criminal affiliations,” the police said.
Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to crimes related to the illegal sale of narcotics.
Police have not yet arrested the main accused SK Sadiq Mohammad (30) of Sahadevkhunta area of Balasore in the case.
