Bengaluru, Oct 9 (IANS) Karnataka Police on Thursday filed a charge sheet in the court against 12 people for posting obscene messages to Kannada actress and former Congress MP Ramya after she expressed sympathy for the family of the victim in the fan murder case related to actor Darshan.
All the 12 accused are fans of actor Darshan, who is the second accused in the fan murder case. His partner Pavitra Gowda is the first accused.
Both Darshan and Pavitra Gowda are currently lodged in Bengaluru Central Jail.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB), Bengaluru Unit, has filed a 380-page charge sheet in the 45th Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court. The police have also included screenshots of messages and comments made on social media.
The charge sheet also includes the statement of actress Ramya and confessional statements of the accused. While a charge sheet has been filed against 12 accused, the police are still searching for six more suspects.
Police said that additional chargesheet will be filed after the arrest and investigation of the remaining accused. Of the 12 arrested, four are still in jail, while the others have been released on bail.
It is expected that the court will start the hearing soon.
Darshan’s fans had targeted Ramya for sharing a post about the fan murder case and commenting that justice should be served.
Ramya had filed a police complaint against 43 social media accounts. The accused had also threatened the actress with rape.
Ramya had filed a complaint with Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh on the evening of July 28 against fans of actor Darshan for sending obscene and derogatory messages following his comments on the fan murder case.
Ramya had said, “I shared the news about the developments in the Supreme Court regarding the bail plea of actor Darshan to give hope of justice to the common people. After this, trolling started. I have filed this complaint as the voice of women.”
She said, “I have filed a complaint against 43 social media accounts. Some of them even gave me rape threats. If this can happen to me, what about others? Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemantha Kumar Singh has assured me of action and has transferred the case to the cyber crime wing. Women have the same freedom as men. Actor Darshan should have asked his fans not to post such messages.”
He said, “As celebrities and public figures, we should follow the law and set an example for others. Earlier, superstars Yash and Kiccha Sudeep were also targeted online. I had raised the issue then too. If action had been taken earlier, things would not have escalated to this level.”
Ramya further said that many accused used fake profiles with women’s names and posted obscene pictures. She said she has received support from the film industry, but many women are afraid to speak out for fear of character assassination.
