The Hispanic was a word that was coined by the federal government for people who landed from Spanish speaking cultures. However, being ethnicly Hispanic can reflect history, cultures and various arrays of national origin.
There are many other identifiers for Hispanic people, which largely depend on personal preference. Mexican Americans, the largest event, that grew up during the 1960s civil rights era, can identify as chicles. Others may go by the original nation of their family, such as Colombian American or Salvadorian American.
