Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) In another shocking incident, an inebriated patient allegedly molested a female doctor intern at Kolkata’s Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Monday night when a woman doctor intern was molested by a man who was brought for treatment to the emergency department of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

It is alleged that despite hearing the commotion, the policeman sitting outside did not come inside. Later, when the intern went and informed them about the incident, the police intervened.

After this incident, doctors and students of the said hospital contacted the authorities. He raised the question as to how such an incident happened in the hospital despite the police being present.

On Wednesday, medical students protested in front of the principal’s office demanding security for doctors and nurses at the hospital.

One of the protesters told a section of media persons, “Due to police inaction and security negligence, one of our on-duty interns was harassed and molested. Doctors and health workers are working day in and day out, risking their lives. That is why we have protested, demanding justice from the authorities. We have demanded proper security.”

Over the past few weeks, there have been reports of female doctors and nurses being assaulted and molested in many government hospitals across the state.

In most of the cases the criminals were arrested by the police. However, no one has been arrested yet in this case.

A senior Kolkata Police official said, “We have received a complaint regarding the incident. We are investigating it.”

It is noteworthy that after the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, the security of the medical centers of the city is under question.

Recently, a female doctor was assaulted and threatened with rape in a hospital in Howrah. Several people, including a traffic home guard, were arrested for attacking the doctor.

In another incident, a minor girl was allegedly assaulted at SSKM hospital. An outsider was arrested in connection with the incident.

Soon after, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called a meeting, in which principals and superintendents of government hospitals attended.

Kolkata Police Commissioner, District Magistrates of all the districts and Superintendents of Police of all the districts were also present on this occasion.

Mamata Banerjee repeatedly raised questions regarding security in medical establishments in the state.

He also asked the hospital authorities and police to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
