Quota activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday sought the Maharashtra government’s implementation of the draft notification regarding Kunbi caste certificates for Marathas from Wednesday, warning that if his demands are not met, The demand is that a hunger strike will begin on February 10 and will last until death.

Talking to reporters, he said a special session of the state legislature should be convened to convert the notification into law to allow Marathas with Kunbi certificates to enjoy quota benefits in government jobs and education.

Jalanji ended his agitation just four days after the government issued a draft notification stating that blood relatives of Marathas who have records indicating that they belong to the Kunbi community will also be recognized as Kunbi.

Kunbi is a farming community and falls under the OBC category and Jarange, who has spearheaded the push for Maratha reservation since August last year, has been demanding that all Marathas get Kunbi certificates so that they can avail quota benefits in government jobs and education.

“The notification must be implemented immediately. A special parliamentary session should be convened to enact a law based on the notification. If the implementation does not start tomorrow (Wednesday, January 31), then I will fast indefinitely starting from February 10.” The event people said.

The state government has fixed February 16 as the deadline for seeking suggestions and objections on the notification of the draft revised rules seeking to include the word “sage soyare” (blood relative) sought by Jarange.

Jalanji said he was not confused about the validity of the notification but was worried about the different voices in the government on the issue.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he would even “approach Delhi” to ensure that the existing OBC reservation framework is protected in the state, without taking names but said someone There is talk of heading to the capital.

“We will not make any statement until February 16. But we are discussing now because there are two different statements from the state government and we have decided to be on alert,” the activist said.

He was talking to the media after paying tribute to the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Raigad Fort. Jalanji maintained that the decision on the notification was taken in consultation with all relevant parties and the government should take cognizance of the Maratha community’s support for immediate implementation of the notification and a permanent law on the quota issue.

He said the cases filed by the police against the Maratha protesters should be withdrawn before February 10. “It has been noticed that the Shinde Committee (panel headed by retired judge Sandeep Shinde) is not functioning properly. We are yet to accept the Hyderabad Gazette (Kunabi record for Marathas) and it has not even started Issue Kunabi certificates. The government must accept the 1884 census,” the activist said.

The committee was formed to decide on the method of issuing Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates to Marathas and to find evidence to establish them as Kunbis. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes has extended by two days the deadline for an ongoing survey aimed at gathering empirical data to prove the social and educational backwardness of the Marathas.

The investigation was originally scheduled to end on January 31, but the deadline has now been extended to February 2. The data is being collected and will be submitted to the Supreme Court, where a petition filed by the Maharashtra government for treatment of the Maratha reservation is pending.
