New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday defended the government’s efforts to ‘cleanse’ the Special Intensive Review (SIR), saying they have raised a very fundamental issue. He further said that there is a consensus among all political parties on this matter.
This came after Amit Shah, in an interview with a news channel, emphasized that the SIR was aimed at removing ineligible voters, including infiltrators, dead persons and those who had migrated.
Speaking to IANS, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said, “Home Minister Amit Shah has raised a very basic question. Who can deny that the voter list includes names of people who have passed away, who have shifted, duplicate entries, or names of persons living in India illegally? Though he presents his political viewpoint, the issue is not based on the agenda of any one person or party.” Should not be seen as. “This is clearly a national concern.”
BJP leader Tarun Chugh said, “SIR is like a panacea for democracy because it removes the names of the dead. It is very beneficial for democracy. The West Bengal government, which follows the ideology of the Muslim League, seems desperate to save these infiltrators. This is shameless and condemnable.”
JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar also echoed the sentiment, saying, “There is a consensus among all political parties on this issue. As far as I remember, in 1991 or 1992, when Lalu Yadav ji was the chief minister, a meeting of North Indian states was held in Delhi. It was decided that infiltrators should not be allowed to enter the country. Lalu ji himself had expressed concern over the situation.”
However, Congress leaders had different opinions on the matter, raising concerns over internal political dynamics.
Congress leader Manikam Tagore said, “Nitish Kumar is facing betrayal. Amit Shah has sidelined Nitish’s supporters and ignored them completely. The situation is starting to be like what happened with Eknath Shinde. Nitish Kumar can become the Eknath Shinde of Bihar.”
Congress MP Imran Masood said, “You say you will identify infiltrators now, but what were you doing for the last 10 years? Whenever an election comes, infiltrators become an issue. You don’t even have a clear list. If infiltrators are entering, it only proves that border security has failed under your watch.”
