Kolkata, October 8 (IANS) The situation in the hills affected by floods and landslides, Terai, and Dures areas in North Bengal, did not cause any fresh casualties reported during the last 24 hours ahead in the last 24 hours.
During the last 24 hours, the absence of renewed rainfall in the region not only prevented the situation from deteriorating, but also increased the speed of relief, rescue and restoration.
An official of the Darjeeling District Administration, the worst affected district in the state, said that although repair and restoration work for many roads has been completed, the main connecting road between the hills and the plains is not yet communicable.
The district administration official said, “Nevertheless, alternative routes of Tindriya Road and Panakabari Road are being used to bring tourists down from the hills to the plains. So far, most of the tourists have been evacuated and all of them have safely reached Siliguri,” said the district administration official.
Fortunately, the weather forecast has not predicted any major rainfall in all districts of North Bengal during the next 24 hours. According to predictions, three districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar can see light for moderate rains on Wednesday. Yellow alerts have been issued for three districts.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in North Bengal for the last two days, was reviewing the situation in the affected areas there, will return to Kolkata this afternoon. After returning to Kolkata, he is expected to give more updates on administrative initiatives being taken in the affected areas.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister made a short visit to a hospital in Siliguri, where BJP Lok Sabha member, Khagan Murmu was admitted. When he and BJP chief Kode Shankar Ghosh, in West Bengal Assembly, were allegedly allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress workers in Bamundanga in Jayatipiguri district, they suffered injuries.
Ghosh, who was admitted to the same hospital, refused to agree to meet the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, BJP’s information technology cell chief and party central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, had so far described Vikas as another attempt to get campaigning by the Chief Minister.
Malvia said in a social media statement, “It is no surprise that it was another crazy effort by the Chief Minister to get cheap publicity – especially after the violence after killing the crowd in Bamandanga under Sulkpara, a region was used to settle illegal Bangladeshis for a long time.”
