Norrie became the first British man to defeat the current world No. 1 since Dan Evans defeated Novak Djokovic at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2021, coming from a set down to win 4-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.
The 30-year-old fended off two break points from Alcaraz late in the final set, handing the Spaniard his first defeat at a tournament since the Miami Open in March – the six-time Grand Slam champion has since gone on a 17-match winning streak at the Masters level.
Alcaraz committed 54 errors in the entire match and was seen arguing with his team after losing control in the second set.

“It’s a big thing for me,” said Norrie, a former top-10 player who dropped to 91st in the rankings in May this year. “I am coming back from my injury. Last year I lost the first round of qualifiers here.
“I’m trying to enjoy my tennis in the second half of the year. I was able to do that. To get a win like this… it’s the biggest win of my career, my first win over the No. 1 player in the world, probably the most confident player in the world at the moment, he and [Jannik] Sinner joint.
“I’m very happy with the way I did it. There are a lot of opportunities and I have to keep trying and keep pushing for more. I was able to work hard and get the win. I’m really happy.”
Nori will play Valentin Vacherot or Arthur Rinderknecht in the third round, with the Shanghai finalists meeting Another cousin clash on Wednesday,
Meanwhile, Alcaraz lost for only the eighth time this season. His defeat means that if Sinner goes all out and wins the title in Paris this week, he could regain the No. 1 ranking for the first time since the US Open final.
