Kolkata, Oct 15 (IANS) Actress-turned-politician and deputy leader of the Trinamool Congress parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha Shatabdi Roy on Wednesday said there will be no special intensive review (SIR) in West Bengal without Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s permission.

“The Chief Minister had already said that there will be no SIR in West Bengal. She does what she says,” Roy said.

Preparation work for Special Intensive Review (SIR) is already underway in the state.

Roy, a four-time Lok Sabha member from Birbhum constituency, did not clarify how the chief minister of a state or a state government can stop the SIR, noting that the amendment is a periodic exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The last time SIR was conducted in West Bengal was in 2002. At present, the work of “mapping and matching” of names of voters in the current voter list with 20022 is in the final stage.

The ECI has already directed District Magistrates, who are also District Returning Officers, and Additional District Magistrates (Elections) to complete the “mapping and matching” process within this week, after which the notification for the SIR will be announced.

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal last week clarified that existing voters whose names were in the voters’ list in 2022, when the last SIR was conducted in West Bengal, will automatically be considered valid voters.

Those who are not named in the 2022 list will have to submit any document as citizenship proof as mandated by the Commission.

But in this case, Aadhaar card alone will not suffice, and the concerned voter will need one of the other documents mandated by the Commission.
