quality and appearance
The duvet comes in all sorts of colors and designs, but, in hopes of replicating my usual white Egyptian cotton duvet cover, I chose to test the white natural cotton waffle version. The Night Lark coverless design is made from cotton with a textured waffle design on the top for added comfort, and it comes in a smart duffel bag that will be useful for storing the duvet when not in use.
When I took it out, it seemed a little thinner than my normal duvet, but I was amazed at how soft it was. The edges are bound and neatly stitched and the soft waffle sides are a charming detail, so it doesn’t feel like you’ve forgotten to put on the duvet cover. In fact, it probably looked better on my bed than my usual duvet cover, which I often leave ironing and cursing the folds until it’s time to wash my bedding again.
This coverless duvet cannot be ironed, so I have every excuse to be lazy. Surprisingly, it didn’t look like I had forgotten to put on the duvet cover and I think if I had chosen a patterned or colored version it would have been even less obvious that it was coverless.

fill delivery
There is no fear of lump filling here. The duvet is filled with Night Lark’s SmartFill fiber filling, which the brand says provides the same warmth as the down duvet in the equivalent tog, but is lighter due to the finer fibres. It is made from 100 percent recycled PET plastic bottles and is easily compressible and maintains shape.
The stitching on the duvet keeps everything in place and means it will look exactly the same in the morning as it did when you first put it on the bed. It was much thicker than I expected, which made it feel attractive, and making the bed every morning was a dream. There was no moving or smoothing required at all to keep it presentable. Even after a week of nightly use, the filler was distributed exactly the same as the first use.

temperature regulation
I hate feeling overheated during the night, so after using the goose down quilt, I was worried it might be too hot to sleep under this coverless design. However, it felt beautifully light, with a fluffy marshmallow feel, making it a pleasure to sleep under at night. I tested the 10.5 tog first and found it every bit as cozy as my goose down duvet, although, if you prefer a weightier duvet, you may want to add a blanket on top.

During the first week of testing, it was particularly cold and I found that I overheated very quickly once I went to bed, even quicker than my usual quilt. I was warm the whole night but I didn’t feel like I was overheating at all. Even when the weather turned mild, I felt like I stayed at a steady temperature throughout the night.
It’s worth noting that some Night Lark coverless duvets have a microfiber cover that probably doesn’t feel as plush as my cotton one, so if you’re concerned about how your bedding feels, it’s a good idea to double-check that you’re choosing the cotton version.

I also tested the 4.5 tog version and found it equally effective at controlling the temperature. It was too light for me to use in the winter and I needed an extra blanket or blanket over it, but it would be fantastic in the summer. I find that I wash bedding even more regularly when the weather is hot, so a coverless duvet will make the whole process faster and easier.
wash rinse
In the first week of testing, I couldn’t think of a single negative thing to say about the Night Lark Coverless Quilt, so much so that I was on the verge of replacing every duvet in the house and getting rid of all the covers.
As I was dreaming of the space I could save in my closet without piles of extra bedding, I ran into a problem. When I went to wash my 10.5 tog duvet, I realized it only fits inside a 10kg capacity washing machine – sadly this is bigger than the one I have. Although I loved the duvet, it seemed a bit excessive to change my washing machine to accommodate it. I had a lot more luck with the 4.5 tog, which fit easily into my 8kg machine.

After washing it, I put the coverless duvet straight into my tumble dryer and the duvet was completely dry within a few hours. I was happy to see that there was no moisture even in the corners, and I could throw it straight on my bed. Even when I intentionally spilled coffee on the duvet before washing it (all in the name of testing), I found that the stains came out easily in a normal wash, so I definitely thought the duvet would last a long time and still look great.

The whole process was much quicker and easier than dealing with separate bedding, and I liked the fact that it felt really fresh after washing. Even after multiple washes, it looked and felt as good as new, with no signs of shrinking, movement or wear. However, I generally prefer to use my tumble dryer less, so I will definitely line dry it outside when the weather is warmer.
Size and tog rating
The Night Lark Coverless Quilt comes in 4.5 or 10.5 tog, although there are some duvets available in 6 tog as well. Generally, a 10.5 tog is suitable all year round, although I always like to switch to a lighter tog during summers, but it depends on personal preference.
Depending on the size and style you choose, the Night Lark Coverless Quilt prices start at £45. Most styles of this coverless duvet are available in single, double, and king sizes, but keep in mind that a king at 10.5 tog (and even some doubles) will require a larger washing machine. Some styles are available in super-king sizes and are junior children’s quilt Available. If buying an unusual color or print, double-check that it comes with a pillowcase, as not all do.
