New Delhi, 6 October (IANS) National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken cognizance of a media report that two children aged 8 and 10 died due to electrocution playing inside the Durga Puja pandal in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
It was reportedly, the incident occurred on 24 September, when the children came in contact with an iron pipe, which was allegedly charged by the alleged negligence by the organizers of the pandal.
The top human rights body has observed that the content of the news report, if true, raises a serious issue of human rights violations.
NHRC has issued notices to Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary and Superintendent of Police, Jabalpur for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
The report is expected to include the current status of the investigation.
According to media reports made on 25 September, a three-member team has been formed under the leadership of a sub-division Magistrate (SDM) to investigate the incident.
Preliminary investigation by the Electricity Department revealed that the electrocution was caused by illegally drawn electricity.
The victims were identified as an 8 -year -old Ayush Jharia and Ved Sriva, about 10 years old. Both children died after touching the live wire. Established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, NHRC, an autonomous statutory body, is an avatar of India’s concern for promotion and protection of human rights.
Its primary role is to protect and promote human rights, which are defined as life, freedom, equality, and dignity of individuals guaranteed by the Constitution or dignity of individuals applied by courts in India.
The apex human rights body has the power to take action on the basis of media reports, public knowledge or other sources without receiving a formal complaint of human rights violations.
