New Delhi, September 23 (IANS) NHRC has sought a report from the Delhi government on the death of a destitute patient after delivery in the washroom of a government -run hospital, an official said on Tuesday.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took a motu cognizance of a media report on the incident at the Institute of Human Behavior and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), where the destitute woman was admitted on 7 September under a court order.
The media report said that the child died due to alleged reduction of facilities in the hospital.
The report claimed that the hospital staff took a lot of time to manage a clamp to cut the umbilical cord before taking the woman and newborn to the nearby Swami Dayanand Hospital by the ambulance. Despite being taken to the hospital, the infant could not be saved.
The commission said in a statement that the contents of the media report, if true, is a serious issue of human rights violations.
“Therefore, NHRC has issued notices to the Government of Chief Secretary, NCT of Delhi, called for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks,” it said.
According to media reports on 10 September, the hospital staff confirmed that the expected mother was admitted there despite the lack of facilities required for the birth of Ihabas. He is now, allegedly, treatment at another government hospital.
Earlier, the Commission had taken cognizance of a media report that one worker died and three other were seriously injured while cleaning a sewer in Ashok Vihar area of North Delhi.
The NHRC said on Monday that it had issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the NCT government, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, and the Delhi Police Commissioner seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
According to media reports, the victims’ colleagues alleged that no security equipment was provided by the private construction company that attached them to work.
The police control room allegedly received a late night call about the incident, and all four workers were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where doctors declared one of them dead. The other three were admitted to the ICU in critical condition. The manager of the company is being questioned.
