Guwahati, Oct 18 (IANS) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has taken a major initiative to ensure the safety of elephants and smooth train operations by implementing Intrusion Detection System (IDS) across its network and jurisdiction. Officials gave this information on Saturday.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the innovative system aims to protect wildlife while maintaining operational efficiency, especially in areas where railway lines pass through forested and elephant-inhabited areas.
He said the IDS uses advanced optical fiber sensing technology to detect the movement of elephants near railway tracks, thereby generating real-time alerts to train drivers and control rooms to take timely preventive action.
According to CPRO, the trial operation of IDS has been successfully initiated in four important sections of NFR jurisdiction. These include Madarihat-Nagrakata section under Alipurduar division in West Bengal, Habaipur-Lamsakhang-Patharkhola-Lumding section under Lumding division, Kamakhya-Ajara-Mirza section under Rangia division and Titabar-Mariani-Nakachari section under Tinsukia division in Assam.
Sharma said that together, these pilot installations cover a total of 64.03 km of elephant corridor and 141 km of block sections, which is an important milestone in the Railways’ commitment to wildlife conservation and safe train movement.
The successful commissioning of these test sections has paved the way for the next phase of IDS implementation on the remaining 146.4 route kilometers of elephant corridor sections of Northeast Frontier Railway.
The target date for completion of this expanded project has been set as April 2026, by which time the system is expected to be fully functional in all the identified elephant corridors, the CPRO said.
Through this initiative, Northeast Frontier Railway reaffirms its commitment towards sustainable development, environment management and passenger safety.
Sharma said that by integrating technology with conservation, NFR is setting a national standard for responsible railway operations in areas rich in biodiversity.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) operates in the northeastern states and seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of North Bihar, with over 7,362 track kilometers (TKM) under its jurisdiction.
