As Newcastle United beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 on Friday night, Paul Dummett compared Elliot Anderson to Diego Maradona.
For starters, one has to take into account that the comment was tongue-in-cheek as the Argentine great is one of one.
However, Anderson has previously been compared to the former Napoli legend, with Joey Barton once saying, “I’ve been listening to a lot of Bill Shankley tapes today. He talked a lot about a 19-year-old Diego Maradona and how he slows down in the penalty area, exactly like Elliot Anderson does. (He is) such a talent.”
While Barton may have been wholly serious, Paul Dummett was not when likening Elliot Anderson to Diego Maradona after his bright display for Newcastle in their victory against Nottingham Forest.

The English midfielder came on for Allan Saint-Maximin in the 46th minute of the contest, adding both steel and silk to the side who showed both attributes on their way to a crucial triumph.
As Newcastle magician Elliot Anderson was praised for his showing against Nottingham Forest, Paul Dummett compared him to Diego Maradona on Instagram, commenting, ‘Geordie Maradona.’
Elliot Anderson will prove key in the top four race
The 20-year-old, who could have got on the scoresheet if not for a strangely disallowed goal will certainly have a role to play in whether his side qualify for the Champions League. With the Magpies sometimes looking bereft of ideas going forward, his eye for a pass and creativity will come in handy.
While Newcastle starlet Elliot Anderson may not quite be Diego Maradona, even if Paul Dummett seriously believes he showed the flashes of the legend against Nottingham Forest, he is one hell of a talent.
And if Bruno Guimaraes ever has an off day, there is no better creator in the middle of the park to rely upon that Anderson.
