The media further stated that the lawsuit has been filed in New York federal court. The April 8 lockdown was said to have violated prisoners’ constitutional rights to practice their faith by prohibiting them from attending major religious events.
The lawsuit was filed by six inmates with various religious backgrounds.
“A solar eclipse is a rare natural phenomenon that holds great religious significance for many people,” they said in their complaint to the court. The plaintiffs further said that events like this “deserve gatherings, celebrations, worship and pray”.
The lawsuit was filed after prison officials refused to allow viewing of the solar eclipse, saying it was not classified as a holy day.
