New independent watchdog signed in law in watershade moment for English football

Web Desk, 21/07/202521/07/2025

An independent football regulator has been signed in the UK law after obtaining royal consent by the Football Governance Act, describing fans how their clubs run.

It acts as a watershhed moment for English football, introducing a football watchdog for the top five levels of the men’s game with the Act to ensure that the clubs are frequent and are accountable to their fans.

The regulator will also have “backstop” powers to set up a financial disposal English football league (EFL) and Premier League If they themselves cannot agree.

House of Commons It was planned to establish independent regulators earlier this monthIn the third reading with MPs, 415 votes voted in favor of 98 votes – 317 majority.

“This is a proud and defined moment for English football,” said the Prime Minister Kir Stmper.

“As someone who has loved sports throughout his life, I know how deep it runs through our communities. This is where memories are made, and generations come together.

“Our Landmark Football Governance Act fulfills the promise made from us fans. It will protect clubs they cherish, and they play an important role in our economy.

“Through our plan for change, we are starting a strong, fair future for the game we all love.”

The Act follows a long visit to the law, which began after the European Super League effort, and a series of high-profile cases of clubs facing financial waste.

In recent years, fans of Bari, McClassfield Town, Derby County, Reading and many others have been left to withstand careless mismanagement, excessive risk -taking and financial devastation results in their club.

Culture secretary Lisa Nandi Said: “Football clubs are made and maintained by fans for generations, but often they do not turn when their clubs face crisis.

“Today, which changes as this Act, he will give hope and assurance to people, working with the regulator to protect clubs in towns and cities across the country, where football clubs mean so much, many.

“From Southend to Blackpool, Partsmouth to Wigan, these reforms have been operated by fans for fans. I will always be proud that this government has taken a pledge of its manifesto to improve football rule and support them, and I pay homage to all those who have helped us to distribute this historic moment for the country’s game.”
