Nets rookie Whitehead (calf) out for season

Brooklyn Nets first-round draft pick Darik Whitehead will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing left calf surgery on Monday.

The team said the surgery has an “expected recovery period of approximately three months” and the forward is expected to be ready to participate in Brooklyn’s offseason program.

The 19-year-old Whitehead has only played two games for the Nets this season, averaging 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 12 minutes per game. He also appeared in a total of 17 games for G-League affiliate Long Island.

Whitehead, the 22nd overall pick out of Duke last June, also underwent two foot surgeries, one before his only college basketball season and another before the draft.
