shooting at brown university It happened Saturday inside an engineering building on the eastern edge of campus, where Ivy League The school is found in a residential neighbourhood.
Hours before the attack, security camera footage captured a person of interest who police say was “covering” a quiet and affluent corner of College Hill, out of reach of the busy streets that run through the urban complex. ThriftRhode Island.
Here’s a timeline of the video evidence that police and… FBI Revealed so far:
2 pm to 2:08 pm: The earliest video released by police shows a man dressed in black and masked walking past stately 19th and early 20th century mansions on the sidewalk of Manning Street before turning onto Cook Street and later George Street. The person of interest would spend most of the next hour walking down busy Hope Street, an informal eastern boundary of Brown’s campus and about a block away from one of the better known streets that traverse Providence’s East Side.
2:08 to 2:13 pm The same person walks down Benevolent Street, but stops and turns in front of the Aldrich House, home of the Rhode Island Historical Society, which has cameras near its main entrance and side doors. A spokesperson for the society later declined to comment other than to say that the organization was cooperating with investigators. The man is then seen at the side entrance of the Aldrich House, a small outbuilding, and then past its gated lawn and a line of trees on George Street.
2:16 to 2:18 p.m.: More paranormal activity occurs around the Aldrich House. Notes from the video, shared on social media by the FBI and later removed, say the man “suddenly turns west toward George. The second man follows.” The second man can be seen carrying a small light-coloured bag on Cook Street. Immediately after turning the corner, another person is seen running in the same direction as the person of interest. Police On Wednesday shared new photos of people carrying light-colored bags that they want to talk to because they are close to the person of interest. The main subject of the investigation later makes a brief appearance walking on the sidewalk along the Brown campus on Hope Street.
Another video, taken at 2:20 p.m., from the Historical Society building, shows the man running away from the complex, eastbound on Benevolent Street toward Cook Street. The playing clip is followed by a 30-minute intermission, with minimal footage publicly disclosed.
2:51-2:53 pm The video shows the man walking down George, Cook and Manning streets again, covering the same ground he walked earlier. Doorbell camera footage shows the man walking west on Manning Street toward the university campus with a backpack slung over his shoulder.
2:53 p.m.: Car camera footage taken from a Nissan Rogue shows the man turning north from Manning Street onto Hope Street and into a parking lot near Brown’s Baras and Holley Engineering building. This is the last known sighting for over an hour. Officials have said that one reason they did not have video of the shooter was because Brown’s old engineering building does not have many cameras.
4:03 pm: Shots were fired inside a classroom in the Baras and Holley Building, where several students had gathered for a study session to prepare for final economics exams. Two students died and nine were injured.
4:06 PM: Shortly after the shooting, the man is seen walking calmly from the same Brown parking lot toward Hope Street. As the person of interest crosses Hope Street, a police car with emergency lights is parked nearby. The officer exits the vehicle and rapidly moves towards the engineering building. The person of interest turns onto Waterman Street and continues to leisurely walk east along Waterman (not Hope Street, as the FBI has stated).
4:15 PM: The sun sets over Providence with the earliest sunset of the year in a week, plunging the city into darkness as an intensive search begins.
