The National Commission for Women (NCW), following a fact-finding mission on February 12, 2024, has strongly condemned the dire situation observed in West Bengal. The development came after a team from the National Commission for Women visited Sandeshkari to assess the response of local authorities regarding reports of severe violence and intimidation against women.

Notably, the NCW team’s findings revealed a disturbing pattern of neglect and complicity by the Bangladeshi government and law enforcement.

Delina Khongdup, a member of the National Council for Women, expressed deep disappointment at the behavior of local police during the visit. The Director General of Police (DGP) reportedly refused to cooperate with the team, while the Superintendent of Police (SP) also did not extend any support to them.

Disturbing accounts from women in the village paint a horrific picture of widespread fear and systemic abuse. The victims recalled incidents of physical and sexual violence at the hands of police and Trinamool Congress (TMC) members. Those who spoke out faced immediate reprisals, including confiscation of property, arbitrary arrests of male relatives and further brutality.

In a joint statement titled “Sandeshkali Gramvasi,” the women detailed the countless horrors they suffered, including harassment, torture and blatant violations of their dignity and rights.

In a harrowing incident that highlighted the seriousness of the situation, a member of the National Council for Women recorded a woman’s testimony, but the recording was deleted as the victim pleaded for safety.

The NCW team said this blatant act of intimidation and censorship requires urgent action.

NCW Chairman to visit Sandeshkhali

NCW chief Rekha Sharma will visit Saunderskari in the coming days to discuss the safety and security of women in West Bengal with the police and victims. The West Bengal police have failed in their duty to protect the most vulnerable and require immediate intervention from the government.

The National Council of Women stands with the women of Saunders Cali and is committed to pursuing all avenues to ensure justice and accountability for the atrocities they have suffered.
