“Spoke to NCW Chairperson Smt @VijayaRahatkar who has taken serious cognizance of the heinous gang rape of an #Odia medical student at a medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal. @NCWIndia has deputed a fact-finding team and based on its findings and observations, has issued strong recommendations to the State Government of West Bengal, including impartial investigation and prosecution, recovery of the victim. The women’s wing of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protested in Bhubaneswar on Monday evening over the brutal gang rape of an Odia medical student and burnt the effigy of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Reacting during the protest, BJP Mahila Morcha president Aishwarya Biswal said, “It is extremely shameful that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, despite being a woman herself, showed no sympathy towards the Oriya girl who was brutally attacked in Durgapur.
“Their insensitive comments and silence on such a horrific incident shows a complete lack of respect for women. Violence against women is on the rise in West Bengal, and the state government has failed to protect its daughters. BJP Mahila Morcha strongly condemns this incident and demands strict punishment to the culprits.”
Congress-affiliated Nari Nyaya Vahini activists also protested here on Monday demanding justice for the Oriya medical student.
According to reports, the victim, a second-year medical student of a private medical college and hospital at Durgapur in West Burdwan district of West Bengal, had gone outside the college campus for dinner with a male friend last Friday night when a group of youths on a motorcycle started following them and passed objectionable remarks at them.
The accused men allegedly chased the male friend, dragged the medical student to a wooded area behind the campus and gang-raped her.
West Bengal Police has so far arrested five accused involved in this heinous act. A three-member team of Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) led by chairperson Sovana Mohanty met the victim at the hospital in Durgapur on Monday and inquired about her health condition.
