New Delhi, Nov 15 (IANS) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Chennai has busted a major drug smuggling attempt, seizing over 28 kg of high-grade hydroponic ganja, worth an estimated Rs 10 crore, from two women at the Chennai International Airport. An official gave this information on Saturday.
The interception took place on November 13, 2025, based on specific intelligence.
According to officials, the accused – both Indian nationals – were stopped after being closely scrutinized following their suspicious travel pattern and luggage details.
A thorough examination of his check-in suitcase revealed 28.080 kg of premium quality hydroponic marijuana, which was tightly packed and concealed to avoid detection.
“The narcotic substance was found hidden inside two check-in suitcases, both carried by the arrested passengers,” the NCB said in a press note.
Investigators have revealed that the duo had purchased the drug from Phuket, Thailand and were attempting to smuggle it into India for further distribution.
Preliminary findings suggest that unknown operators in Phuket handed over drug-laden suitcases to the women at the airport, and instructed them to deliver the bags in Chennai.
NCB sources said that one of the arrested women works in the real estate sector and may have been lured into this trade by promises of high profits.
The other woman, who once worked as a domestic maid in Dubai, now lives in Chennai and occasionally plays small roles in the Tamil film industry.
Authorities are investigating whether the banned content was meant for individuals associated with Kollywood, as preliminary information points to a possible link.
The agency has launched an in-depth investigation to trace the network’s backward linkages in Thailand and forward linkages in India, aiming to identify suppliers, financiers and intended recipients.
Officials said that efforts are underway to eliminate the entire syndicate.
“Preliminary investigation also reveals that the seized narcotics were meant for distribution within Chennai, possibly including to people associated with the Kollywood film industry,” the NCB said.
“Further investigation is underway to identify the entire network involved, including suppliers, financiers and intended recipients of the prohibited substance,” it said.
Both the women have been arrested under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985.
