Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and senior Muslim League-North leader Maryam Nawaz, on Monday became the first female chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.
Maryam, 50, senior vice-president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, is in the Sunni Ittehad Committee (SIC) backed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party The chief ministerial election was won despite the MPs going on strike.
The PML-N leader defeated PTI-backed SIC’s Rana Aftab to win the chief ministerial election in the politically crucial Punjab province, which has a population of 120 million.
Maryam went to Jati Umra to visit her mother’s grave and then went to the Punjab Assembly where elections for the post of chief minister were being held.
Maryam also visited the graves of her grandparents, the PML-N said in a post on X.
“For the first time in the history of our country, a woman will become the Chief Minister of Punjab. Maryam Nawaz Sharif will be the first woman to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab!” PML-N ahead of elections Post on X to say.
