More than a quarter (28%) admit they lack confidence in distinguishing legitimate calls from their bank.

Building societies have now launched a new feature based on their Scam Check service.

It enables customers to instantly confirm whether the call they receive is genuine through Nationwide’s banking app.

Customers can open the app, go to “More” and “Call Checker” to see if they are on a call with Nationwide.

Nationwide warns scammers may ask victims to share personal details, provide security codes, transfer money or even lie to banks or building societies.

While more than half (53%) say they hang up immediately when they become suspicious of a call, only 29% report it to their bank.

Jim Winters, head of economic crime at Nationwide, said: “Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated and phony phone calls are one of the most common ways they trick people into handing over their money.

“We are hard-wired to trust others, and when someone uses clever tactics and skilled scripts—often putting us under pressure or causing us to panic—it can be difficult to know who to trust.

“Our call check feature gives customers peace of mind by confirming that a call is genuine. It’s a simple yet effective step that can prevent someone from becoming the next crime statistic.”

Censuswide conducted the survey of 2,000 people in December.
