National campaign targets mid-lane domination

Roads England has launched a campaign targeting drivers who hog the middle lane on motorways.

According to a recent National Highways Agency survey, some 32% of drivers admitted to occupying the center lane at least “occasionally” and 5% said they “always” do so.

More than one in five people said they tailgated other drivers, a behavior also covered by a campaign called “Small changes, change everything”.

The Highway Code states that drivers on motorways and dual carriageways should use the left-hand lane unless overtaking and “leave at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle ahead on the motorway”.

Breach of these rules may result in prosecution for careless driving, an on-the-spot fine of £100 and 3 penalty points.

Sheena Hague, director of road safety at the National Highways Agency, said: “Our campaign aims to inspire motorists to adopt small changes that will have an overall positive impact on them and other road users, reducing congestion and maintaining Traffic is light.”

RAC road safety spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Mid-lane jumping and tailgating are more than just an annoyance for drivers, these behaviors put everyone on the road at risk.”

AA president Edmund King added: “Driving considerately means not only being kind, it also means staying safe.”

Data from the British Department for Transport shows that in the 10 years to the end of 2022, some 198 people were killed and 6,730 seriously injured in road traffic accidents in the UK, with vehicles following too closely being a factor.
