New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS) In a deeply disturbing incident, 10 people were killed and several others injured in a powerful explosion in a car near Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Red Fort metro station on Monday evening.
The blast at a busy traffic signal spread panic in the Old Delhi area, setting fire to nearby vehicles and shattering windows.
Eyewitnesses described the explosion as a deafening roar, with thick black smoke billowing from the debris. The incident comes hours after Jammu and Kashmir Police busted an international terror module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind in Faridabad and recovered 2,900 kg of explosives and weapons.
Various political leaders have condemned the blast and demanded a thorough investigation.
Expressing deep grief, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Extremely saddened to hear about the car explosion near Red Fort metro station. Initial reports suggest that many precious lives have been lost.”
He stressed accountability for the lapses in the high-security zone and demanded a prompt and thorough investigation.
Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad said he was shocked by the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
“Whoever is behind this heinous act must be dealt with sternly,” he said.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the blast and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
“The visuals from the site are truly heartbreaking,” he posted on social media.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray described the blast as “truly shocking” and prayed for the injured. Party spokesperson Susieben Shah also expressed grief, saying, “May peace and strength be with all those affected.”
Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala described the incident as “painful and worrying”, prayed for the dead and the speedy recovery of the injured.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called the blast “a tragic and serious incident”, and urged a thorough investigation and immediate security measures to restore public confidence.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said he was deeply distressed by the news and prayed for strength for the bereaved families.
Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra offered condolences and prayers, saying she was “shocked by the horrific blast”.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav described the blast as “painful and worrying” and urged the Center to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation.
“National security should be above politics. We stand with the government in ensuring justice,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described a deafening roar that “felt like the earth was collapsing,” with plumes of black smoke billowing from the debris.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed the intensity of the blast, adding that seven fire tenders were rushed to douse the fire, while the area was immediately cordoned off.
Notably, Jammu and Kashmir Police in the morning busted an inter-state international terror module linked to terror outfits Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, leading to the recovery of 2,900 kg of explosives, two assault rifles, pistols, timers and other material in Faridabad area of Haryana near New Delhi. Police said seven people have been arrested so far.
After the explosion at the Red Fort, this recovery took place just a day before the second phase of Bihar assembly elections.
