NEW DELHI: Spin maestro Nathan Lyon has etched his name into the record books, surpassing the legendary Shane Warne to become Australia’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket against Sri Lanka.
With his latest haul in the Galle Test, Lyon now boasts 60 wickets against the island nation, surpassing Warne’s tally of 59.

Most Test Wickets for Australia vs Sri Lanka

  • Nathan Lyon – 60 wickets
  • Shane Warne – 59 wickets
  • Mitchell Starc – 57 wickets
  • Glenn McGrath – 37 wickets
  • Craig McDermott – 27 wickets

Lyon’s milestone came as Australia wrapped up a convincing 2-0 series victory with a nine-wicket win in the second Test at Galle. The visitors dominated from start to finish, dismissing Sri Lanka for 231 in their second innings before chasing down the target of 75 runs with ease.
The off-spinner was instrumental in dismantling Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, taking four wickets in the second innings. He broke a crucial partnership by removing Kusal Mendis, who was Sri Lanka’s last major hope.

His clever use of bounce and turn made life difficult for the hosts, underlining why he remains a crucial weapon in Australia’s bowling attack.
Matthew Kuhnemann also contributed with a four-wicket haul, while Beau Webster sealed the innings with a first-ball wicket.

Despite an early setback when Travis Head was dismissed by Nishan Peiris, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne made light work of the target. They calmly guided Australia to victory, ensuring a dominant finish to the series.
With this win, Lyon not only surpasses Warne but also reinforces his status as one of Australia’s greatest spinners. His remarkable consistency and match-winning performances continue to make him a vital asset in Australia’s Test line-up.
