Kohima, Oct 12 (IANS) Nagaland acting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday highlighted the role of sports in promoting peace and said “sports break down barriers, promote understanding and teach us to resolve differences through respect rather than conflict”.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the eighth edition of Niyathu Sports Festival 2025, the Governor expressed gratitude that Nagaland has a peaceful and stable environment, which allows its youth to grow, dream and compete freely.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, General-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief of 3 Corps, Lieutenant General AS Pendharkar and other dignitaries were present at the event.
Bhalla, who is the Governor of Manipur and also holds the charge of Additional Governor of Nagaland, said the Niyathu Sports Festival is “not just a competition, but a celebration of youth, health and togetherness”.
He commended Niyathu Group and Niyathu Privilege Club for their unwavering commitment in promoting sports through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which has now become one of the most awaited sporting events of Nagaland.
The Governor remarked that over the years, the Niyathu Sports Festival has transformed Dimapur into a “vibrant meeting place of athletic talent”, attracting participants from all over India.
Expressing happiness, he said that this year saw the highest participation ever, with athletes from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Goa, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam and many other states participating in the event.
He said, “Your presence here reminds us that sports transcends borders – uniting people from different regions, cultures and languages in the common spirit of discipline, friendship and fair play.”
Reflecting on the deeper meaning of the festival, the Governor said: “It is not just about medals or wins, but about promoting healthy lifestyle, nurturing young talents and fostering a sense of belonging.”
He urged the participants to maintain the values of teamwork, perseverance and respect beyond the sporting arena.
Encouraging each participant, the Governor said: “Whether you return home with medals or simply with fond memories, you are all winners. The true reward is the strength of character you have built.”
He called upon everyone to become “citizen athletes” and urged them to bring the same passion and discipline in their daily lives, be fair in their work and contribute positively to the society.
Bhalla heartily congratulated the winners, appreciated the organizers, sponsors and volunteers and expressed his gratitude to the audience who made the event lively and enthusiastic.
The Governor expressed hope that the Neethu Sports Festival will continue to grow “as a symbol of youth, health, peace and community spirit – not just in Nagaland but across the country”.
