The federal government has announced plans to launch a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based toll pilot project on the 10-lane Mysuru Highwaybangalore highway.

According to The Hindu, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed in response to a query from Union Member of Parliament Lahar Singh Siroya that the decision is to explore advanced technology for tolling on major roads, including Bengaluru-Mysore in Karnataka. NH-275 Highway.

Minister Gadkari emphasized that a consultant has been appointed to provide guidance on the implementation of accessible charging GNSS technology. He explained that GNSS enables precise vehicle positioning on highways, which helps in calculating tolls based on distance traveled.

The technology, which has been under consideration by the government for more than three years, promises to enable seamless movement of vehicles without having to stop paying tolls.

Elaborating on the process, Gadkari mentioned that vehicle license plate photos will be captured to determine the toll amount based on the highway distance covered.

The system replaces RFID-based Fatags, which were introduced in 2016 and will be mandatory from January 2021. According to the minister, since its launch, Fatags worth Rs 813 crore have been issued and the penetration rate has reached 98 per cent.
