Kolkata, Oct 29 (IANS) The mystery behind the real reason behind the suicide of a 57-year-old man named Pradeep Kar in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district on Tuesday, allegedly due to fear of being affected by the possible National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal, seems to be deepening.
Kar’s name was in the voter list in 2002, which was the year of the last Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
With the ground work for the new SIR starting from November 4 in West Bengal, the ECI had already made it clear that those named in the 2022 voter list will automatically be considered voters in the new exercise and such voters will not even have to submit any documents to get their names.
The question is why NRC or even SIR would threaten a person whose identity as a valid Indian voter is automatically established with his name in the 2002 voter list.
The second mystery on the cause of his death has come to light after a statement given by Kar’s brother-in-law Uttam Hazra to media persons, in which he said that four fingers of Hazra’s right palm were cut off in an accident a few years ago.
Now the question is coming up whether it was possible for any person, unless he is a leftist, to write about suicide with his right hand when four fingers are missing.
Hazra had told media persons that although Kar mainly used his right hand for some essential tasks like eating, he had never seen him writing.
Incidentally, on Tuesday, the police recovered a suicide note from the hanging body of the car, in which it was written – “NRC is responsible for my death.”
The BJP had already raised doubts over whether the suicide note was actually written by the deceased person and also demanded a proper investigation into the real reason behind the suicide.
On Tuesday, both Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP and the central government of using the NRC as a tool to spread a sense of fear and division where people often doubt their right to exist, a reflection of which was felt in Kar’s suicide.
Right from the beginning, the Trinamool Congress leadership was calling the SIR an indirect ploy by the BJP and the Central government to implement NRC in West Bengal.
