Yangon, Myanmar:
Myanmar’s National Defense and Security Council agreed on Wednesday to extend the state of emergency for six months, the junta said, again delaying elections promised by the military.
“Acting President Myint Swe announced the extension of the state of emergency for another six months… as the situation is abnormal, so that the process of combating terrorists can continue,” the junta said in a statement.
In February 2021, the military declared a state of emergency as it overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s government, triggering mass protests and a crackdown on dissent.
It has since extended the state of emergency several times as it battles armed opposition to its coup across the country, delaying new elections it had promised.
Myanmar’s military-drafted 2008 constitution requires authorities to hold new elections within six months after the state of emergency is lifted, and the junta says the constitution remains valid.
The military’s crackdown on dissent has killed more than 4,400 people, according to local monitoring groups.
