My Adventures With Superman looks like the best summer of your life

By | Published | No Comments

My adventures with Superman looks like my kind of fun, completely confident with the ideals of America’s original superhero. Superman’s best narrative conflict has always been internal – Why is he actually here? Why does someone so powerful meddle in our pathetic problems? — and the secret identity, manifested as a newspaper reporter, whose job requirements have always been public service and altruism, has resonated for generations since 1938.

So here we have a new animated series from Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and Max. My adventures with Superman looks like an updated take on the classic, platonic Lois-and-Clark mystery, starring Supes (Jack Quaid) as a himbo bell who plays straight for Lois (Alice Lee), the steely-eyed investigative journalist who is still the one last missing source to find out the true origin of Superman for the exclusive 1A. Top lens Jimmy Olsen and grumpy editor-in-chief Perry White are also there to complete the picture.

However, it’s the college intern’s angle that seems particularly new, at least as a way to help a younger generation relate to a very old story and character archetypes. (And for old bastards like me to wax poetic about it, too.) I was an intern at a college newspaper thirty years ago, oh man, and even those days were the adventure of a lifetime, at least in my memory.

So when you see the Superman mythology in that context oh well count me in because it looks like Lois Lane and Clark Kent are going to have a great summer in the town room in The Daily Planet.

My adventures with Superman premieres on Adult Swim on July 6 and begins streaming on Max on July 7.
