Mukhtar Ansari hospitalized again after health condition deteriorates in UP jail

Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was admitted to Rani Durgavati Medical College Hospital on Thursday after his health condition deteriorated.

Mukhtar Ansari’s lawyer Naseem Haider told news agency ANI: “I received information that he has been brought here, so I came here…”.

Earlier, Mukhtar Ansari was shifted to jail from Uttar Pradesh Rani Durgavati Medical College after being discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

Mukhtar Ansari was admitted to a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday after complaining of abdominal pain in prison.

“Some reports are pending. His condition is stable but he has difficulty speaking,” Naseem Haider said.

Mukhtar Ansari has been elected as a provincial councilor for the Mau constituency five times, twice as the candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party. He last contested parliamentary elections in 2017.

Earlier on March 13, Mukhtar Ansari was sentenced to life imprisonment in a 1990 case of using forged documents to obtain a weapons license.

This is the eighth case in the past two years in which the former five-term attorney general has been convicted and sentenced by an Uttar Pradesh court.

Prior to this, in December 2023, the Varanasi MP/MLA court found Mukhtar Ansari guilty of threatening to murder witness Mahavir Prasad Rungta, a 26-year-old coal businessman Nand Kishor Rungta, and sentenced him to five years one term of imprisonment and one term of imprisonment. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a period of six months and a fine of Rs 10,000.

On October 15 last year, the Enforcement Directorate had seized land, buildings and bank deposits worth over Rs 73.43 lakh as part of the money laundering probe against Mukhtar Ansari.
