MP: Kang took ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ in BJP government, demands GST refund

Bhopal, September 22 (IANS) while the rates of new Goods and Services Tax (GST) have come into force from Monday, the Congress in Madhya Pradesh intensified its attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with a disgusting Jib of ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’.

State Congress President Jeetu Patwari while talking to the media counsel at the new GST rates, said on Monday that people will get the real benefit when the money paid under the old rates after 2017 will be returned to their bank accounts.

“It is okay that the BJP -led Center eventually reduced the GST rates and people will benefit from it, but what about the money paid under ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’, which ruined the lives of crores of people and shut down small businesses and many people became unemployed after 2017.”

Responding to the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government, who started a state-wide awareness campaign to highlight the benefits of the new GST rates, Congress leader Patwari said that if the state government provides for GST refunds like Income Tax Return (ITR), people will get more benefits.

He said, “The Congress will request the BJP government to make provisions for the return of GST (collected under the old tax slab) like the Income Tax Return (ITR). In addition, the government should help those who lost their business and lost their jobs due to” Gabbar Singh Tax “,” he said.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday started a state-wide awareness campaign on GST by visiting several shopkeepers in Bhopal’s historic Chowk market.

He also distributed copies of GST resolution to the traders and addressed their questions and concerns related to GST.

This awareness campaign will continue as the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to take the message of GST reforms for people living in every corner of the state.

Apart from the Madhya Pradesh government, the state BJP unit will also organize similar campaigns in all districts and blocks.

Under new GST reforms, daily food and essential commodities, life and health insurance policies, automobiles and transport, electronics, equipment, stationery, beauty services, lifestyle services and machinery will be cheaper.

Ultra-Laxari items will be taxed at 40 percent, while tobacco and related products will remain in more than 28 percent cess brackets.

The largest overhaul since GST was introduced in 2017, currently 5 percent, 12 percent, 18 percent and 28 percent structure will be replaced with only two rates – 5 percent and 18 percent.
