Ujjain, Nov 25 (IANS) Alleging shortage of urea fertilizer and delay in delivery, farmers staged a massive protest in Ujjain on Tuesday, disrupting traffic for hours on the Ujjain-Agar (Malwa) highway.
The protest, which was attended by over 200 farmers, began after complaints that government-run fair price centers had failed to supply enough fertiliser.
The farmers locked the gate of Ujjain Mandi and sat on strike demanding timely distribution.
The protesters claimed that while around 300 farmers are issued tokens every day, only 70-80 farmers get fertiliser.
“We wait for hours and are asked to return the next day,” said farmer Dhirendra Parmar.
Another farmer, Jagdish Kumar, said that despite standing in the queue since morning, many people return empty handed.
Police and district officials reached the spot to convince the farmers to vacate the road.
A senior agriculture department official assured that there is no shortage of urea and every farmer will get adequate supply.
After the assurance, the farmers ended their protest and traffic resumed.
Earlier, similar shortage of urea and DAP was reported during the paddy sowing season, triggering protests across Madhya Pradesh.
