Bhopal, Oct 16 (IANS) The Congress on Thursday criticized Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the FIR lodged against state Congress chief Jitu Patwari following a protest.
An FIR was lodged against Patwari at the Bhopal police station after a dramatic protest on Wednesday, when he carried a sack of paddy on his shoulder.
Reacting to the development, Madhya Pradesh Congress media cell chief Mukesh Nayak, who was also with Patwari during the protest, alleged that the filing of FIR against Patwari was an attempt to suppress the voice of the opposition.
“When we met Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at his residence, he spoke very politely and assured us of help to the farmers. Once we came out of his residence, he lodged an FIR against me and PCC chief Jitu Patwari. This means he has a double face,” Nayak said during a press conference.
Nayak also said that when so-called religious Baba organizes big programs and people die stuck in long traffic jams, the BJP government does not take any action.
Nayak said, “Shivraj Singh Chouhan has made a big mistake. Congress will continue to expose his wrongdoings.”
According to Nayak, an FIR has been registered at TT Nagar police station.
On Wednesday, Patwari, along with around 50 party workers and farmers, left the Congress office without prior informing the police or administration, leading to chaos along the entire route.
Police attempted to stop the group several times by erecting barricades and deploying vehicles, but minor clashes broke out as Congress workers advanced and moved towards Chouhan’s residence.
The aim of the protest was to highlight the grievances of farmers and demand direct payment for their produce instead of the Bhavantar scheme.
Amid the uproar, Chouhan came out to meet the protesters and later invited Patwari and his delegation inside for discussions.
