MP CM discusses OBC reservation issue with Solicitor General Tushar Mehta

Bhopal, 23 September (IANS) Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the state government has stepped forward to resolve the controversial case of 27 percent reservation for other backward classes (OBCs) in Madhya Pradesh.

The Chief Minister wrote on his official social media account X on his official social media account X after a meeting with Solicitor General Tusar Mehta during his visit to New Delhi late on Monday, “The state government is taking action with full commitment about the OBC reservation issue.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister held a detailed discussion with SG Mehta and presented the government’s plan to increase the reservation quota from 14 percent to 27 percent for OBC candidates in the recruitment of the state government.

The meeting was held two days ago when the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear day by day on a group of petitions filed by various stakeholders including the OBC Mahasabha on Wednesday (September 24).

Earlier, day-to-day hearing was scheduled to begin on 23 September (Tuesday); However, it was re -determined for 24 September.

Earlier, on August 28, Chief Minister Yadav had called an all-party meeting to resolve the Vexed OBC reservation issue through unanimously taking opposition leaders.

The BJP leader said that this was the first time in the last half decade when the BJP government in the state has taken the initiative to resolve a controversial issue through consensus with the opposition political parties, the BJP leader said.

In particular, the line of 27 percent reservation for OBCs in Madhya Pradesh came in March 2019 when the previous Kamal Nath government ranged from 14 percent to 27 percent for OBCs in the state.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court later extended quota for OBC citing 50 percent reservation roof.

About 70 related petitions were filed in the High Court.

In 2022, the state government introduced the 87:13 formula, under which 13 percent of the posts were not filled till the settlement of cases related to the pending cases in the court.

The government’s move in the High Court was challenged.

On 28 January this year, the High Court dismissed the petitions challenging the state government’s 87:13 formula.

On 13 February this year, the state government transferred the Supreme Court demanding an initial hearing of the OBC Kota issue.

Prior to 2019, Madhya Pradesh had 14 percent reservation for OBC, 20 percent for ST and 16 percent for SC, 50 percent reservation.

Increased OBC Kota has increased the total reservation by 63 percent by breaking 50 percent quota roof.
