Bhopal, Oct 18 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Hemant Khandelwal on Saturday accused the opposition Congress of doing ‘drama’ on farmers’ issues and said the party has failed to launch important beneficiary schemes during its tenure.
Speaking at the ‘Kisan Sammelan’ program organized at Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s residence in Bhopal, Khandelwal said, “When Congress comes to power, they open fire on farmers like Multai in Betul district. Congress leaders are doing drama to attract more attention from the media.”
He asserted that both the central and state Congress leaderships were attempting to “mislead the people”.
Khandelwal said that when Congress was in power in Madhya Pradesh, it had never thought of starting beneficiary schemes like Kisan Samman, Bhavantar and PM Kisan Nidhi.
Addressing a large gathering of farmers associated with the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), the state BJP chief recalled the 1998 Multai firing incident in which 18 farmers were reportedly killed while protesting for compensation after their crops were destroyed by heavy rains and hailstorm.
Khandelwal’s comments come three days after state Congress president Jitu Patwari and party workers protested outside the residence of former chief minister and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal.
After the protest, Bhopal Police has registered a case against several Congress leaders including Patwari for protesting without permission outside the residence of Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. He was booked under section 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) at Bhopal’s TT Nagar police station.
Khandelwal further said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state BJP government is making every possible effort to empower the farmers through various welfare schemes.
“Our government is working for farmers, but it is also true that merely increasing production, providing better support prices and providing compensation for crop losses is not enough. There is a need for comprehensive reforms in the agriculture sector to ensure economic growth for farmers,” he said.
The state BJP chief also mentioned that the government is working to make the state’s Sanchi milk brand at par with major names like Amul.
He said, “Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is continuously focusing on this project. One day our Sanchi milk brand will become a national brand.”
