Mozilla is cutting jobs to reduce costs in response to changing market

Firefox browser developer Mozilla will reportedly lay off 60 employees as the company plans to scale back investment in a variety of products.

According to TechCrunch, Mozilla said in a memo that it will focus on bringing “trustworthy AI to Firefox,” and to do so, it will bring together the Pocket, Content, and AI/ML teams that support Firefox content.

“In light of ‘MozProd’s’ staffing reductions and personnel budget reductions, a number of roles within the personnel and other support services organization have been consolidated so that we can provide appropriate levels of support for our product portfolio,” the company said. Mozilla will also shut down its 3D virtual world Hubs, which it launched in 2018, and scale back investment in its mozilla.social Mastodon instance.

The company added: “The actions we are taking will strategically align our participation in the Mastodon ecosystem with a smaller team and bring smaller experiments faster to people who choose to live on mozilla.social instances.”

The company is reducing investments in segments where “competitors are crowded and struggle to offer differentiated products.”

It said there will be no changes to legal/policy, financial and business operations, marketing or strategy and operations.
