The National Toy Hall of Fame has welcomed three new inductees: the ubiquitous gooey plaything Slime, as well as the enduring board games Battleship and Trivial Pursuit.

Each year, the prestigious institution honors toys that have fostered imaginative play across generations and selects finalists from thousands of online nominations. A combination of public votes and expert panel decisions determine the final inductees.

Milton Bradley’s strategic naval combat game, Battleship, and trivia quiz, Trivial Pursuit, have both achieved notable success, each selling more than 100 million copies over several decades, according to the Hall of Fame.

Battleship began as a pencil-and-paper game in the 1930s, but it was Milton Bradley’s 1967 plastic version with fold-up stations and model ships that became a hit with the masses. Its popularity reached its peak when universal pictures And Hasbrowhich now owns Milton Bradley, released the 2012 film “Battleship” based on the game. According to the Hall of Fame, Battleship was one of the first board games to be computerized in 1979, and now has several electronic versions.

Trivial Pursuit lets players compete alone or in teams as they move around a board answering trivia questions in exchange for wedges in game pieces. Canadian journalists Chris Haney and Scott Abbott came across the game in 1979 and eventually sold the rights to it. HasbroChief curator Chris Bensch said frequently updated special editions have emerged for younger players, baby boomers and other segments, and an online daily quiz keeps players engaged.

The appeal of slime is more about the squish than the skill.

It was introduced commercially in 1976 and has been manufactured under various brand names, but is even more accessible as a do-it-yourself project. The Internet offers a variety of recipes using ingredients such as baking soda, glue, and contact lens solution.

Curator Michelle Parnett-Dwyer said, “Although slime has strange connotations to slums and swamps – for some people it’s all part of the fun – the toy provides meaningful play,” adding that it is also used for stress relief and building motor skills.

Honorees will be placed on permanent display in the Hall of Fame inside The Strong National Museum of Play Rochester, new york,

This year’s inductees were voted against other nominees including the game Catan and Connect Four, the Spirograph drawing device, the “Star Wars” lightsaber. Ferbs And Tickle Me Elmo. They also beat out classics including Scooter, Cornhole and Snow.
