Moto G64 first impressions

Motorola has now launched a new big G series phone. The Moto G64 5G is the company’s latest budget smartphone, offering some great features at a low price. The Moto G line has been around for a few years and is one of the manufacturer’s most profitable products. With the new Moto G64, you also get some world-leading features, something Motorola also did with the recently launched Moto Edge 50 Pro.

The Moto G64 5G will succeed last year’s Moto G54 and come with some new hardware. This is my first impression after using the new G series phones for a few days.

At first glance, the design of this phone looks similar to the Moto G54 5G. You get a familiar rectangular rear camera module with dual sensors and LED flash, a glossy acrylic glass back panel, and a thick plastic frame. The phone is also similar in thickness to last year’s model, thanks to the large battery inside. From the outside, you’d think there’s nothing new, and that seems to be the case.

The phone’s display is protected by Gorilla Glass

The front features a 6.5-inch IPS LCD display that offers Full HD+ resolution and 30-120Hz refresh rate, the same as the Moto G54. The new feature is Gorilla Glass protection for the display, thanks to Motorola’s partnership with Corning. However, Motorola did not specify which version was used. The display has a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera, along with thick bezels and a thicker chin, just like its predecessor. The placement of the buttons is also the same. Like I said, externally, there’s nothing really new besides the Gorilla Glass protection.

The phone is available in three colors, and we’re testing the mint green version. The Moto G64 5G is also available in Pearl Blue and Ice Lilac color options. This time around, the phone doesn’t come in black color. Moto G54 5G is also available in pearl blue and mint green colors, and its appearance is exactly the same as the new phone.

As for the camera, the Moto G64 5G offers a 50-megapixel primary rear sensor with support for optical image stabilization. There’s also an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor on the back, which also offers macro support. In the short time I’ve been using the phone, I’ve found that the main rear camera takes decent photos in daylight conditions. You also get a 16-megapixel selfie camera on the front. It’s nice that Motorola has included two cameras available on the phone instead of adding a third macro/depth sensor. Camera specs are also similar to its predecessor.

In terms of connectivity, Motorola supports 14 5G bands, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, and FM radio. The phone also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom. You get a dual-speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Moto G64 5G also features a USB Type-C port, a hybrid SIM tray with microSD card storage expansion, and dual microphones. It also has an IP52 waterproof rating.

Now, so far, everything about the new G-series phones seems to be the same as the old models, but there are a few changes under the hood. The Moto G64 5G is the first phone to feature the new MediaTek Dimensity 7025 SoC. The chipset is said to be faster than the older 7020 variant, but I’ll check that in the full review. You also get up to 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. In my few days with the phone, I didn’t experience any lag or stuttering in the UI or animations, but I’ll have to test it further to see how good the new chipset is.

In terms of software, the Moto G64 5G runs My UX software based on Android 14. Unfortunately, the phone will only receive 1 major Android OS update. Motorola will provide security updates for 3 years. The software is basically clean, with some Motorola features and bloatware.

You have some bloatware installed on your phone

Moto G64 5G is equipped with a large 6000mAh battery and supports 33W fast charging. A TurboPower charger is provided in the box. During my time with the phone, I found the battery to be durable, but we’ll be doing more testing in the coming days to see how well it lasts.

Motorola’s G-series phones have always been good value for money, and the new Moto G64 5G seems to be no different. There aren’t a lot of new features compared to the Moto G54 5G, but you do get better display protection and a slightly more powerful chipset. The price of the phone starts at Rs. The base version costs 14,999, which I think is a great deal. Should you buy this phone? Stay tuned for the full review to find out.
