The Punjab Police has exposed a scam associated with a mother of India and a Canadian-based daughter, which targeted young Indian men with the hope of getting married and going to Canada. He is alleged to have scammed more than $ 200,000 () 1.60 crore) from many men and their families.
Sukhdarshan Kaur has been arrested after organizing several fraud marriage for her daughter in India, Harpreet, who lives in Surrey, BC Police alleges that Sukhadarshan searched for suits for daughter, Harpreet through newspapers and advertisements, which then presented as a possible braid and spoke on a video call.
The alleged victims were then promised immediate marriage and Canadian visa following their busyness, but the bride never came to India physically. The alleged weddings will then be delayed or even excuse.
Sukhdarshan allegedly asked for money from the groom’s families, explaining that he had repaid the debt after sending his daughter to Canada. Then both women will soon start requesting money citing students tuition, rent and medical emergency situations. Some families told Omni News that they sell ancestral land or take large loans to pay financial demands. He described emotional trauma and financial ruin as a result of the scam.
Immigration refugee and citizenship Canada (IRCC) said in a statement that they cannot comment on specific matters due to the causes of privacy and consent.
“In examples of marriage fraud, enforcement action can be taken, which involves issuing orders to remove a spouse or wife or partner, who cheats on marriage on the basis of misinformation. It can lead to their removal from Canada,” IRCC wrote.
“This is a crime for a foreign national to get admission in Canada only to marry a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.”
Surrey officials have not yet confirmed the case or have provided any complaint against Harpreet. Omni News has tried to contact Harpreet using the phone number provided by the victims, however, it has failed.
Punjab Police said that they became aware of the scheme after Rajwinder Singh, one of the alleged victims, who had already lost more than $ 29,000 (₹ 18.5 lakh), accidentally received WhatsApp Voice notes. In The Voice Note, Sukhadarshan discussed matters related to money and extended the suspicion of Rajwinder, who gave a tip to the police.
Police raided one of the alleged engagement on 10 July and stopped the ceremony, only without her actual appearance, to find a picture of Harpreet. The police then arrested Sukhdarshan, his son, Manpreet Singh and another suspect, Ashok Kumar.
Inspector Akash Dutt told Omni News that the investigation revealed more than $ 200,000 transactions made by several families. Many deception families spoke with Omni News but refused to speak publicly.
The Punjab Police has advised the families to move forward with caution and verify the marriage proposals across the cross-border.
