A new report from the Equity Association shows the top ten stolen vehicles in Ontario, and topping the list is the Honda CR-V.
SUVs are a highly stolen vehicle as it has often been at the top spot over the years. This year the 2024 model was the most popular model for car thieves.
For Canada as a whole, the Toyota RAV4 is the top stolen vehicle in 2024, according to Equate, with 2,080 stolen last year.
“Newer model SUVs, particularly those with keyless security vulnerabilities, remain a prime target for sophisticated criminal networks nationally,” Aquitaine said in a media release Tuesday.
The Dodge Ram 1500 series took second place in Ontario and Canada. Equitable says the 2022 model year was the most stolen model year for Ram.
The Honda Civic ranks third in Ontario with 1,113 thefts. According to Equate, the 2019 model was the most sought-after by thieves.
The association says progress has been made on auto theft, but it remains a national issue for organized crime groups.
“Despite a 19 per cent overall decline nationwide, auto theft is costing Canadians more than $1 billion each year,” said Terry O’Brien, president and CEO of the Equitable Association.
