The incident took place in Taratand police station area, where a religious procession related to Tulsi Vivah was being taken out.
According to local residents, a minor dispute turned into a violent confrontation during the Tulsi Vivah ritual on Tuesday evening.
Trouble escalated on Wednesday morning when the procession reached near the Kali temple, where members of another group allegedly tried to obstruct it.
An argument followed, which escalated when some individuals started recording videos of the procession, leading to objections and provocation.
Within no time, both sides started attacking each other with stones and sticks, due to which panic spread in the village.
Several people were injured, of which more than 20 were taken to nearby health centres. The seriously injured people were later referred to Giridih Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police teams from Taratand initially attempted to control the crowd, but the situation deteriorated. Then additional forces were called from Gandey, Ahilyapur and other neighboring police stations.
Deputy Commissioner Ramniwas Yadav, Superintendent of Police Dr. Bimal Kumar and SDPO Jeetvahan Oraon reached the spot and personally monitored the situation and helped in restoring order.
To prevent any further incident, a large police contingent has been deployed in the area and patrolling has been increased.

SP Dr Bimal Kumar said preliminary investigation revealed that the clash occurred due to a dispute between two persons, which later turned into a group confrontation.
“Strict action will be taken against all those involved in disturbing law and order,” he said.
Officials said the situation was tense but under control and a thorough investigation would be conducted to arrest those responsible.
