Chennai, Oct 11 (IANS) Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) on Saturday condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent comments on the birth rate of Indian Muslims and accused him of trying to incite communal divide ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
In a statement, MMK president and MLA MH Jawahirullah said Union Minister Shah’s comments were not based on factual evidence, but on a political agenda aimed at polarizing voters.
“Available demographic data clearly shows that the birth rate among Indian Muslims has been declining steadily over the last few decades and is now almost at par with other communities,” he said.
Jawahirullah alleged that the Home Minister’s statement was a deliberate attempt to create social discord.
He said, “It is clear that such comments have been made with the intention of inciting communal sentiments ahead of Bihar elections.”
“Using words like ‘infiltrators’ to create suspicion on Indian citizens reflects the Bharatiya Janata Party’s habitual politics of hate and exclusion.”
He said that the most important duty of Amit Shah as Union Home Minister is to ensure the unity and security of all Indians regardless of religion or caste.
“However, by making statements promoting distrust and division, he (Union Minister Amit Shah) has weakened the constitutional values he had sworn to uphold,” Jawahirullah said.
The MMK leader also said that India’s real strength lies in its diversity and unity.
He stressed, “Those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the nation should make statements that promote harmony, not hatred. The language of fear and division has no place in a democracy.”
Calling on political leaders to act responsibly, he said India’s progress depends on unity and social peace, and not on creating suspicion among communities for electoral gains.
He concluded, “The people of this country deserve leadership that unites them, not rhetoric that divides.”
