Kolkata, Nov 12 (IANS) Trinamool Congress on Wednesday reacted to the derogatory statement allegedly made by two-time BJP Lok Sabha member and Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur, calling BJP leaders habitual misogynists.
The Trinamool Congress issued a social media statement on Wednesday afternoon, and along with it uploaded a purported video in which Shantanu Thakur was heard and seen claiming that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s face has become like a “mango sucked by a bat” due to the fear of the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the state.
However, IANS could not confirm the authenticity of the video.
A social media statement issued by the Trinamool Congress said, “Misogyny in @BJP4India is no accident, it is their political culture. From the Prime Minister to his foot soldiers, they have institutionalized the disrespect of women in public life. Every time they fail to defeat the courage, clarity and conviction of Smt @MamataOfficial, they resort to gutter-level abuse.”
In the statement, the state’s ruling party had claimed that Thakur’s latest derogatory comments about Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were part of a tradition established by senior BJP leaders that reflected the male-chauvinist mindset of saffron leaders.
“This is not just misogyny, this is moral degradation. From @NarendraModi’s cheap ‘Didi ‘O Didi’ abuse, to Giriraj Singh’s ‘Thumka’ comment, to Sukanta Majumdar’s ‘Dhanda’ abuse, to Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s obscene comments, each of these exposes the anti-women mentality of the BJP in its ugliest form,” the Trinamool Congress statement said.
According to it, Thakur’s comments reflect the behavior of BJP leaders towards a woman Chief Minister who is respected across the country and is also a reflection of the feeling of insecurity of the party leaders.
“Their hatred towards strong women is pathological. The BJP cannot defeat Mamata Banerjee politically, so they try to humiliate her personally. But Bengal knows better, and the people will respond where it hurts them most: at the ballot box,” the Trinamool Congress statement said.
State BJP leaders have claimed that such remarks from the Trinamool Congress are not acceptable as their leaders, including the Chief Minister, have in the past used derogatory language about both the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in public meetings.
