Kolkata, October 16 (IANS) A youth has been arrested and sent to seven-day police custody in connection with the rape of a six-year-old girl in Suti police station area of Murshidabad district.
During a power failure in the village on Tuesday evening, the accused allegedly took the girl behind a bush and raped her.
Police said on Thursday that the accused was produced before the Jangipur sub-divisional court, from where he was sent to seven-day police custody.
Regarding the incident, Farakka Sub-Divisional Police Officer S.K. Shamsuddin said, “The accused has been arrested and is currently in police custody. He is being interrogated. The victim has been sent for medical examination. Efforts are being made to complete the investigation soon.”
Police said that during initial interrogation it has been revealed that the arrested youth is addicted to various types of drugs.
According to the police, the child was admitted to the local hospital after the incident on Tuesday night.
Police sources said that the accused has scratch marks on various parts of his face and body. On Wednesday, policemen took the accused to the spot.
According to police and local sources, the child was playing in the neighborhood at the time of the incident.
At that very moment there was a sudden power failure in the area. Taking advantage of the darkness, the accused youth dragged the girl to a bamboo garden in a village of Suti police station area. It is alleged that the accused youth raped the girl in that bamboo garden.
Later, hearing the girl’s scream, the villagers ran towards the spot. He saved the girl who was bleeding profusely. The villagers also caught the accused red handed.
After receiving the news of the incident, officers of Suti police station reached the spot and arrested the youth and took him with them.
This incident has created tension in the area.
