Michelle Obama Is sharing her honest thoughts about her husband Barack Obama controversial tan suit,

Back in 2014, then president The Internet went viral when he wore a light suit to a White House briefing, where he discussed the US military response to ISIS and Russian intervention in UkraineAt the time, critics considered Barack’s trial “unpresidential” and “monstrous”, arguing that it was not appropriate for their discussion of such a serious topic.

Now, ahead of the release of her upcoming fashion-forward book, See, Michelle Looking back at the controversy, she called some of the criticism both she and her husband received for their sartorial choices “pure hypocrisy”.

“I can draw pictures of Jackie O [Kennedy] Just a second and see this fashion icon as First Lady in a sleeveless dress,” she explained during a new interview People, Seeing how his own preferences are sleeveless clothes There was an uproar online.

“So at one point you say, ‘Oh, this is politics. If you can’t beat them, make everyone else fear them. That was the motto. If it wasn’t clothes, it was ‘terrorist fist bump.’ It was every word we said. It was my husband’s tan suit,” she added.

Michelle then expressed how much she “loved that tan suit” worn by her husband, despite the controversy.

“When she wore it, I said, ‘Oh my God, you look so cute.’ [Then] I was like, ‘Oh, you’ve got to be ready for that thing. Welcome to my world,” she added. “That was toward the end of his presidency, so we were used to all the crazy issues people came up with.”

Criticism of Barack’s suit, later dubbed “Tan-gate”, continued to make headlines in 2014. For example, Former New York representative Peter King said at the time: “I think none of us can forgive what the President did yesterday… for him to come out… in a light suit, a light gray suit.”

He added, “ISIS is watching.” “If you were the head of ISIS, if you were Baghdadi, if you were anyone in ISIS, would you be afraid of the United States and just walk away tomorrow? Would you be afraid that the United States is going to use all its power to crush ISIS?”

However, the Obama administration defended Barack’s decision. A day after the initial controversy, then-White House press secretary Josh Earnest said: “The President stands behind the decision he made to wear his summer suit at yesterday’s news conference.”

Barack has since reiterated his point acceptance of caseEarlier this year he told journalist Steve Scully that he looked “fantastic” in the suit.

Barack also acknowledged that photos of former Presidents Ronald Regan and George Bush wearing similar suits began circulating online at that time. “I thought I looked better than him in it,” he said, laughing.

Additionally, he referenced the viral look during his presidential tenure, including during the inauguration of his final Press conference in 2017,

“Let me be the first to say that I was really feeling like wearing a tan suit today,” he said. “But Michelle, whose fashion sense is a little better than mine, tells me it’s not appropriate in January.”

In August 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris turned heads in her brown suit during the first night of the Democratic convention, during her run for the US presidency during last year’s election. At the time, people felt her outfit was indicative of Barack’s controversial look.

Barack later celebrated the look at the Ex by sharing a throwback photo of his tan suit, along with a photo of Harris on stage at the convention.

“How it started. How it’s going,” he has written“Ten years later, and it’s still a good look!”
